Responsible to you Face
Time and tide wait for no man. We can't turn back the clock. The same goes for ageing but did you know that 80% to 90% of ageing are triggered by the sun's damaging rays and physical ageing accounts for only 10% to 20% of ageing? Chilling isn't it? Well, it's never too late to start taking stock of the facts and take up responsibility for our own face! Reap the rewards years down the road when we discover ourselves looking younger than our age!
1. Protect Your Skin
Sun Protection
Protect ourselves from the sun, even on cloudy days. Lather on a minimum of SPF20 everyday 15 minutes before leaving the house, 15 minutes being the duration required for the sunscreen to take effect.
Remember that sunscreen wears off after 1 to 2 hours!
So reapply before heading out to the sun again!
Be mindful of other sun exposure when sitting in the car or by the windows as harmful ultraviolet rays are transmitted via materials made of glass and take note of other instances where light may be reflected while walking on pavements and at the beach. The cumulative effects of photo-ageing cannot be underestimated, especially with the thinning of the ozone layer.
Neglected Parts
In the bid to maintain a beautiful face, we may neglect the other parts of our body. No matter how well we take care of our face, other areas like the lips, neck, hands, feet, elbows and knees will betray our age! So treat the other parts of our body with equal care.
Bring along a lip balm and a small tube of moisturizer with you wherever you go and reapply on these parts throughout the day!
Professional Care
Identify your skin type and treat your face with tender, loving care accordingly! Apart from using mask treatments once a week, once a month facials by the professionals at reputed beauty salons may be a good idea for general maintenance or treatment.
2. Cleanse Your Face Thoroughly
Cleansing is the most important part of any skin care routine. Skin that is not thoroughly cleansed will bring on further problems. Contrary to popular belief, make-up is not harmful to the skin, especially with the prevalence of non-comedogenic products in the market nowadays. Make-up acts as another layer of protection against the harmful effects of the environment However be mindful to remove all traces of make-up at the end of the day!
(i) Ensure that your hands are properly cleansed with hand soap before embarking on your cleansing routine. Many people forget to clean their hands even though they abide by a strict cleansing routine.
(ii) Don't forget the corners of the mouth, the jawline and hairline as well as around the eyes. Blemishes or breakouts may develop with inadequate cleansing around these difficult to reach areas.
(iii) Wipe your face with a clean towel or tissue paper after cleansing. Imagine wiping your cleansed face with a towel festering with bacteria!
3. Your Skin Reflects Your Lifestyle
Regular Exercise
Exercising regularly is not only beneficial to your mind and body, it actually enhances your complexion in the long run. The simple reason is due to better blood circulation.
Commit to a regular workout routine and your body will thank you for it! Start with exercises that interest you, get an exercise buddy, sign up a gym package or wear gym outfits that make you feel good about yourself - whatever keeps you motivated about exercising!
Adequate Sleep
Sleep is required not only for the physical body to rest, your organs undergo repair at different times of the night as well. Gall bladder detoxification occurs between 11pm to 1am, liver detoxification from 1am to 3am and lung detoxification from 3am to Sam. When an individual is awake at the time of detoxification, part of the energy is diverted to keep him awake, thereby diminishing the full benefits of that particular organ's detoxification. It is only with deep sleep that maximum detoxification is achieved.
With the organs functioning well, your skin will be glowing and showing!
Alcohol
The hazards of alcohol are aplenty. Excessive alcoholism badly affects the liver, brain, stomach, the heart and accelerates ageing and osteoporosis. The detrimental effects of alcohol far exceed its benefits. If you drink, drink in moderation.
Smoking
Smoking is a bad habit. Period. Not only will you get 'smokers breath', nicotine will also stain your teeth, restrict blood flow to the skin, causing your skin to appear dry and sallow, smokers are also prone to developing "tinkles around the mouth and eyes area with this ill habit. Enough said.
Stress
Hectic and stressful lifestyles can cause adverse effects to our skin as well. Take a moment to enjoy the beauty around you and always maintain a positive outlook in life. To combat stress and poor eating habits, you may also choose to enhance your skin by taking supplements or increase your intake of antioxidant foods.
Always bear in mind: Prevention is better than cure.
Taking small steps in protecting your skin will bring in the dividends in the future!
